We teach our children that nobody has the right to touch their private parts without their permission. But somehow it’s perfectly acceptable to cut part of a newborn baby boy’s genitals off before he can even speak? I’m sorry, WHAT? We spend so much time teaching our children about consent and bodily autonomy, but apparently that doesn’t apply to baby boys. And the reasons people give for circumcising healthy newborns absolutely blow my mind. Because his dad is circumcised? Because it’s tradition? Because somebody thinks it looks better? We’re talking about a BABY. Not a cosmetic preference. The foreskin is a normal, functional part of the male body. Boys are born with it for a reason. It isn’t something that automatically needs to be removed. And yes, there are legitimate medical reasons for circumcision in certain situations. That’s an entirely different conversation. I’m talking about taking a perfectly healthy newborn and permanently removing part of his body when there is no medical necessity. I genuinely cannot wrap my head around how we’ve normalized this. We tell little girls their bodies belong to them. When are we going to start giving little boys that same respect? Because bodily autonomy shouldn’t suddenly become important once a child is old enough to say NO. Will you speak up for your son??????? #circumcision
